Cultural Information

When you arrive in Australia, you may notice that many things are very different to what you are used to in your home country. People in a new country often experience, ‘Culture Shock’. Culture Shock happens when you find it difficult to adapt or fit in to a new culture that is very different from your own. It could be the clothes people wear, the food they eat or even the way they say ‘hello’ of ‘goodbye’ to each other. As time goes by, it becomes easier for you to live in a new culture. It is important that you try to make friends from other cultures so that you can talk to each other about the differences that you are experiencing and the things you can do to make your move to a new country easier for you. ACE Australian Centre of English’s has prepared a ‘Cultural Guide for International Students’ booklet that gives you some basic information about cultural differences in Australia. It also gives you some information about where you can find places and services that may be important to you so that you can stay in touch with your own culture.
